How to Stop Your Dog Jumping Up at People

Does your dog jump up every time someone walks through the door?

While it might seem friendly when they're a puppy, jumping up can quickly become frustrating, embarrassing and even dangerous as dogs grow bigger and stronger.

The good news is that jumping up is a common behaviour, and with consistency and the right training, it can be changed.

Why Do Dogs Jump Up?

Dogs often jump because they're excited to greet people. From a dog's point of view, jumping up is simply a way of getting closer to your face and gaining attention.

Unfortunately, many dogs accidentally learn that jumping works because people talk to them, stroke them or push them away – all of which can still be rewarding.

Why Punishment Doesn't Usually Work

When owners become frustrated, it's easy to shout or repeatedly push the dog away.

However, this often increases excitement rather than reducing it.

Instead, it's important to show your dog what you do want them to do, rather than simply correcting the behaviour you don't want.

Reward Calm Behaviour

Whenever your dog keeps all four paws on the floor, calmly reward them with attention, praise or a treat.

By consistently rewarding calm behaviour, your dog begins to understand that staying on the floor is what earns your attention.

Be Consistent

One of the biggest reasons jumping continues is inconsistency.

If one family member encourages jumping while another discourages it, your dog receives mixed messages.

Make sure everyone in the household follows the same approach so your dog learns faster.

Practise Before Visitors Arrive

Don't wait until guests arrive to begin training.

Spend a few minutes each day practising calm greetings with family members.

These short sessions help your dog build confidence and good habits before real-life situations become more exciting.

Every Dog Learns Differently

Some dogs naturally become overexcited when greeting people, while others simply haven't been shown a better alternative.

With patience, consistency and a personalised training plan, jumping up can become a thing of the past.
